Why play live dealer blackjack?

One of the main pleasures in the game of blackjack is beating the dealer. Secondary pleasure comes from beating other players at the table. Sometimes you might even want to chat with other players – or the dealer.

All this is simply not possible in automated blackjack which doesn’t have any flavour to it, it’s just cards being shuffled randomly and presented to you. Very few blackjack players enjoy automated blackjack as each hand is entirely random since the deck is shuffled after every hand. This is not the case in live dealer blackjack – the decks (4, 6 or 8 of them, depending on the casino) are shuffled after a certain point but not after every hand. This allows some players to count cards – or at least to try to.

In short, live dealer blackjack gives you the ultimate blackjack experience. The automated version is no fun at all.

Why play blackjack online?

It’s much easier to find favourable table rules online than it is in land-based casinos and that’s the main reason why all blackjack players are advised to play online, especially if they’re only starting out. The sheer number of online casinos allows players to shop for best table rules. You get much better value for your dollar online.

With recent developments in the world, it is not very feasible to go to a land-based casino and play blackjack there. Even before the pandemic, online live dealer blackjack had the upper hand (pun intended) over the land-based casino blackjack, now even more so.

You can play online without leaving the comfort and safety of your own home, no one know how much you are gambling, how much you’ve lost or how much you’ve won. It’s really simple to make a deposit and play, and you can even do so on your mobile device or tablet on the move.

Since online live dealer blackjack gives you human dealers who actually use real card decks, there is not a single reason to go to a land-based casino instead. Perhaps to socialize – but this is no longer a viable option. Besides, you can chat with other players online too.

How to play blackjack

The game of blackjack is very simple and there’s also a correct strategy that can be applied. In short, the goal is to get closer to 21 than the dealer (or, ideally, get 21). If you go over 21 you lose.

You start with two cards, and so does the dealer. Cards 2-9 are worth their face value, while 10, J, Q and K are all worth 10. Ace is a special case, it can be worth 1 or 10, whatever is better for your hand.

When it’s your turn to make a move, you have four options.

  • Hit: Take another card.

  • Stand: Take no more cards.

  • Split: Can only be done when you start with two cards of the same value. You can split them to make two identical hands.

  • Double Down: You double your bet, but you can only take one card and no more.

The dealer will also try to get as close to 21 as possible without going over, and will follow the same strategy all the time, sometimes with restrictions such as the Hit or Stand on Soft 17 rule. All this allows a shrewd player to use a better strategy to beat the live blackjack dealer. Table rules also make a huge difference.

Blackjack number of decks

Rules of the table make or break your game of blackjack. First and foremost, blackjack can be played from anywhere between 1 to 8 decks, and most commonly it’s 4, 6 or 8. The fewer decks are used, the lower the house edge. That’s why you’ll find most blackjack tables use 8 decks.

Blackjack table rules

The main rule you have to check on every table is whether the dealer must Hit or Stand on Soft 17 (an Ace and any combination of 6). If the dealer must Hit, that’s good for him and bad for you. If the dealer is forced to Stand, this will decrease the house edge by about 0.2% and therefore benefit the player.

How much does Blackjack pay?

It’s commonly assumed Blackjack always pays the same, but this is not the case. The standard is 3:2 but some casinos pay only 6:5 or even 1:1. Of course, you want the Blackjack to pay as much as possible as Blackjack occurs in about 4.8% of hands. Never play at a table where Blackjack doesn’t pay at least 3:2. You might get lucky and find an online casino that pays 2:1!

Table limits

Last but not least, it makes sense to choose a live blackjack table that has the lower and upper limit you’re comfortable with. The lower limit should be the amount you intend to usually bet, while the upper limit should be as high as possible, to let you bet more if you want to.

Live Dealer Blackjack Frequenty Asked Questions (FAQ)

✔ What is online live dealer blackjack?

Online live dealer blackjack is a game in which you have online access to a video stream of a real dealer at a real table, shuffling real cards. This is identical to you being present at the table, except that you can play from your own computer or mobile device.

✔ Is online blackjack different than traditional blackjack?

Yes, but in a good way. Table rules are usually more favourable online. Other than that, it’s the same game. Online casinos just usually choose to have more lenient rules while land-based casinos tend to go for those that benefit them more.

✔ Can I play online live dealer blackjack from Australia?

Yes. It’s just a matter of picking an online casino that accepts Australian players and offers live dealer blackjack. We recommend BitStarz, Joe Fortune and Rich Casino.

✔ Is live dealer blackjack rigged?

No. Blackjack is an honest game and fairness is a matter of table rules, how many decks are used, and how often are the decks shuffled. All of these rules are usually more favourable on online blackjack tables.

✔ Is live dealer blackjack random?

No. Automated blackjack is totally random as the decks are “shuffled” after every hand. In live dealer blackjack, the decks are shuffled according to rules of the table, which means the game is not entirely random.

✔ Is it possible to count cards in online live dealer blackjack?

It takes a serious set of skills to count cards in blackjack, especially when eight decks are used, but it can be done and casinos don’t have anything against it. It can, in some situations, give the player a small edge. However, online casinos usually shuffle decks whenever they pass 50%, which renders card counting useless.

✔ Can I play live dealer blackjack for free?

No. You can play automated blackjack for free, but in order to play live dealer blackjack you must place real money bets.
